Mission of Burma, and other kultcha
Last night I went and bought my ticket for Saturday's Mission of Burma show at the Black Cat. Saturday will be busy: I've got an all-day field trip with my favorite teacher from the Audubon Naturalist Society (Wetland Plant Identification... bug repellent ahoy!), then I'm grilling dinner with Liz, who is putting Stella up for the day in her doggy-door-equipped kitchen, then to the Black Cat. I don't mind going alone, although being there last night really made me miss my old off-and-on friend Susanne, who could usually be relied upon for music shows at least in the beginning. Hey, it's Mission of Burma. Who cares whether I have anybody to see it with?

Now the only question is whether I can hold out until Saturday to buy one of their very fine new t-shirts. Covet covet covet, especially this one and this one.

Then on Sunday I'm headed to the Anselm Kiefer retrospective at the Hirshhorn. He did my favorite painting in DC (this is a big image, but you still can't quite see the texture of the crumpled sheet metal, cigarette butts, caked paint and other random debris), and he's my second-favorite artist after Gerhard Richter (weird that they would both be German Abstract Expressionists--I didn't do it on purpose, I swear). There is also this fun-looking exhibit by Scottish artist Jim Lambie to see while I'm there. All this is a little heavy, but I'm throwing in brunch at Smithsonian Castle to try and get Ming and Seema to join me. They're usually up for kulcha.

Just keep freakin' swimming... swimming swimming swimm oh God.

Random personal detail, probably TMI: I must have applied more antiperspirant than usual this morning because the skanky, supposedly-unscented-but-actually-nasty-fruity-floral fragrance of it is bleeding through my powder and cologne and making me half-sick. I think the culprit might be the very foul smell of freesia. It sucks when your own scent is sickening to you, and there's nothing you can do about it until your next shower.
