“This Is Just to Say
by William Carlos Williams

I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox

and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast

Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold”

That poem always makes me smile!

You know, it always made me smile too, and then I had a teacher who said it struck him as terribly sad, something having to do with a strained marriage in which the main form of communication is notes left on a kitchen table. That made me see it in a whole new light. But maybe I'm overthinking--it wouldn't be the first time :D

I recently saw a take-off on this but I can't remember where...the New Yorker, maybe? One of the publishing blogs? Anyway, people wrote in their versions of this note-as-poetry, including many variations of the "I ate that thing in the fridge you were looking forward to" theme. It was a riot and now I wish I could find it for you.

Wah! From a different source, here's one of the entries from The Guardian's alternative Harry Potter endings contest:

This Is Just To Say

I have killed
the wizard
who was in
your novels

and whose death
you were probably
saving
for book seven

Forgive me
he had it coming
so beardy
and so old

From Miss Snark, poem rewritten as letter to your literary agent:

This is just to say

I have queried
the editors
that were in
your rolodex

and which
you were probably
saving
for my breakout book

Forgive me
they turned me down politely
so bittersweet
and so cold
