I don't really have a favorite bakery here in the DC area. I think right now my favorite bakery is my own kitchen. But when I lived in Boston I had two favorite baked things: the curry donut at the Japanese bakery in Porter Square, and the orange cream buns at a bakery in Chinatown. There are a lot of things I'd be willing to do for a curry donut.
2. Someone’s visiting from out of town and craves something sweet: Where do you take him or her for an experience he or she can’t get at home?
It's on the other side of town from me, but it's worth the drive: I'd go to The Dairy Godmother in the Del Ray area of Alexandria, for the best frozen custard I've ever tasted, plus TDF mix-ins and side dishes like gingersnaps and homemade marshmallows. And I don't even like ice cream. Unless those visitors are coming from Wisconsin, where that style of custard is supposed to originate. In that case I've got nothing.
3. What’s your favorite order at your favorite ice creamery?
Vanilla custard from the Dairy Godmother, see above, with another flavor, or a gingersnap, or one of many delicious toppings. You really can't go wrong as long as it's got vanilla custard in it.
4. Oh no! You forgot to save room for dessert! What dessert item on the menu will you order anyway, because you can’t resist?
Key Lime Pie is the dessert most likely to find its way onto my check.
5. You’ve got a craving for sweets, but it’s so late at night that only the corner convenience store is open. What do you get?
A Heath Bar, or maybe something gummi.
