The Flora Awards
And now it's time for my personal Best of 2006 awards:
  • best blog: aside from my lovely LJ friends, my favorite blogger is still Mimi Smartypants.
  • best podcast: Slate's Audio Book Club, only because it's a true podcast that you can't hear anywhere else. A few radio shows were strong runners-up: Garrison Keillor's Writer's Almanac, KCRW's Good Food, the BBC's From Our Own Correspondent, and the immortal This American Life. What? You thought I was some kind of scintillating scenester? Oh, honey. I'm sorry, you've got the wrong blog.
  • best single: Gnarls Barkley, "Crazy"—some things are insanely popular for a reason.
  • best album: Marisa Monte, Universo Ao Meu Redor
  • best live performance: Pelican, Black Cat, May 11
  • best beauty product: Trader Joe's Nourish shampoo—yes, I've found some fabulous things at Lush, but at $1.99 for a big bottle with no scary chemical names printed on the back, this stuff has solved my lifelong struggle with dry tangly hair, and that deserves an award.
  • best book read: Gilead by Marilynne Robinson
  • best motion picture: Little Miss Sunshine
  • best documentary: An Inconvenient Truth
  • best vacation destination: London was excellent and so was my friend's farm in Brazil, and Chicago (the city I want to move to if I ever grow up). But the award here has to go to San Diego.
  • best restaurant meal: Palena, Washington, DC
Anybody who wants can do this as a meme. Just let me know in comments if you do.

Happy New Year!

Current Mood: calm calm
Current Music: Les Balayeurs du Désert, "Décollage"

I fully intend to dish out my own awards following your format but not today. I think I've stretched my blogging quota for today :) I will find the music awards really difficult to dish out as I love so many new singles and saw so many fabulous live gigs.

I'll keep my eye out for 'An Inconvenient Truth' as its one I haven't seen.

Oh, I know. I think you'll have to stretch the music awards out into several categories.

Oh yeah, wasn't Gilead the greatest? It really blew me away. The funny thing is, I gave it to my mom because she's from Kansas (with some roots in Iowa too) and I thought she'd appreciate the theme, but she put it down because it was too depressing for her. Go figure. I think Jan Karon is more her speed.
